Moving house is exciting, but let's face it, it can be a very busy and stressful time. Packing up your whole home has got to be one of more daunting parts of moving house, but a well-planned packing approach will always help to cut down on stress. From the obvious to some more clever packing hacks, follow our packing tips to help reduce the amount of work you need to do, help moving day run smoothly, get you to your new house, settled in and feeling your best!
Never leave packing till the last minute. It is essential to plan well ahead of time to avoid any potential for disaster when moving day comes around. Always start the packing process with a pen and paper and make a list of anything else you need to do such as calling utilities companies to tell them you are moving or checking that your home insurance (or your removals company) will cover any breakages during the move. If you are well organised and aim to have all your packing done at least a day before you are due to move, you are definitely saving yourself maximum moving headache potential!
Declutter and Clear Out
It's never been a better time to clear out the clutter and reduce the number of items you'll need to pack and take with you when you move. You know what they say, if something doesn't bring you joy, get rid of it! Clothes you'll never wear again, toys the kids have grown too old for, that bread maker you are never going to use. (Seriously, are you?!) Give unwanted items to friends and family, charity shops or sell them on eBay or social media marketplaces. Don't be daunted, you might be surprised how therapeutic a clear out can be. Trust us, once it's gone, it's gone, you won't look back and you will have so much less to pack.
Choose your Removals Firm
Getting several removal quotes is always a good idea to ensure you are getting good value for money and that you get a good feeling from the removal company you choose for your move. Have a look at the company's website or Google Maps listing and check for reviews. It's a good idea to get your removal firm chosen as soon as you know you are going to move, even if you don't know the exact date of the move at that point.
Source Some Decent Packing Supplies
Try and work out how many boxes you are going to need. A moving box calculator such as this one may be handy. Find free packaging supplies to save on costs and to help your home move have less environmental impact. You can often source free boxes and packaging supplies on social media websites or Gumtree. There are lots of Facebook groups dedicated to recycling and reusing moving boxes and other types of packaging.
Always use sturdy packing boxes, particularly for heavier items. Specialist removal boxes made from corrugated cardboard are always going to stronger ones you find for free in a supermarket.
If you are looking to make your life easier, most removal firms will supply you with high-quality packaging materials at a reasonable price. They will also help you work out exactly how many boxes you are going to need. Don’t forget packing extras such as bubble wrap, newspaper and strong tape to keep your items nice and safe and secure.
Label and Take Pictures of Box Contents
Make sure you label each box carefully to tell you which room it needs to get delivered to in your new home. Another tip we love is taking a quick picture of the inside of boxes after they’ve been packed, in case you need to jog your memory later about what’s been put where. Print out the picture and stick it to the box (OK, you may not capture every item in the box), but this can be a very handy way to help you find things.
Pack a Moving Day Essentials Bag
Pack a bag or small suitcase with any essential items you might need throughout your moving day and anything you'll need to access after you’ve arrived at your new home. Think about any important documents, medication, phone or other chargers, some toiletries, a couple of changes of clothes, etc. You might not be able to unpack as quickly as you'd like and having quick access to essentials will really help you out.
Pack your Suitcases!
Save on space and how many items you need to transport by packing up your suitcases instead of extra boxes. Suitcases can be extra helpful when transporting heavier items such as books as the wheels make them easier to move and they are not going to break.
Help is on Hand
And don't forget, there are lots of options for getting help if you are feeling overwhelmed. Most removals firms will offer a variety of packing (and unpacking) options to suit your budget and timescales.
